For a while now we have been thinking of switching from our current phpbb software (which is free) to a paid commercial solution vbulletin. Nearly all the biggest and best forums use vbulletin as it is the premium forum software.

The main advatange for members would be they could upload pics of any file size to a vbulletin forum because it resizes the pics if required. With phpbb we have to limit file size to ~300kb, otherwise it would take ages for forum pages to load and use lots of bandwith.

With phpbb, if a members picture is greater than 300kb phpbb will not allow those pics to be posted. Members have to use software to resize their pictures. Using vbulletin, members simply upload any size picture, vbulletin resizes it.

The main disadvantage is that all passwords would be lost. All members visiting the vbulletin forum would have to reset their password, receiving it by email.

Of course we could allow guests to ask questions, specifically for forum username/password problems in relation to a vbulletin upgrade.

Here is what a default vbulletin forum looks like http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/index.php of course we could change the design to something better if needed.

One more thing, when members post their pics or movies, on phpbb you can see how many times it has been viewed. I don't think vbulletin shows how many times each pic or movie has been viewed, I think it only shows how many times that thread has been viewed.

Anyway, we have been thinking of upgrading to vbulletin for a while now. What do members think? Should we change to vbulletin?

First i want to thank the team for the good support
I don´t hink an upgrade is necessary. The only improvement i can see is the upload of pics bigger than 300k.
Who needs that?
You can see a lot of pics, that ore bigger than my screen.
When i think of all the traffic caused by bigger pics (everyone will upload his 8m pics from the hires Digicam), i can imagine you might get a problem with the size of your server.
Keep it simple, that´s my opinion.
I like to see how many guys have watched my posts. It would be a pitty losing this feature.

I'm with duffy. I like it how it is. Although I appreciate the effort you guys put in (I'm assuming you are guys, rather than girls?)

I'll just explain the picture upload again.

Phpbb Forum Software Which We Currently Use
A member tries to upload their 8mb picture shot on their shiny new camera. After waiting for the file to upload, the forum says sorry, the file size is too big. If member does not know how to make the picture smaller we may never see it.

vbulletin Forum Software
A member tries to upload their 8mb picture shot on their shiny new camera. After waiting for the file to upload, the picture is automatically cropped and resized to e.g. 1000x1000 pixels maximum image dimensions and 300kb maximum file size.

Okay, that is an improvement. I programmed such resizing stuff myself last year. It takes a lot of power to calculate them smaller.
But you´re right, it´s a pitty we cannot see pics from guys who don´t know how to resize.
